An Invitation to Deeper Dependence

"I stand at the door and knock. If you hear My voice and open the door, I will come in and sit down to supper with you."

- Revelation 3:20

I've heard this Scripture time and time again. In fact, it is one of those passages that can become so familiar that we assume there is nothing new to discover. Yet, when I heard it recently, it was exactly the word I needed.

What struck me was not the image of Christ knocking. It was the invitation.

As I reflected on where I am in this season of life, I sensed God reminding me that I can continue to do hard things. At the same time, I felt Him gently inviting me to release some of the comfort I have grown accustomed to – comfort found in routine, structure, predictability, and clarity.

There is nothing inherently wrong with those things. In many ways, they have served me well. But as I sat with this Scripture, I realized that comfort can sometimes reduce our awareness of just how much we need Him. We begin to rely on what is familiar, what is working, and what feels manageable. Before long, our dependence subtly shifts from Christ to the things that make us feel secure.

As I look at this season, both personally and professionally, I know God is calling me deeper. Not deeper into activity or achievement, but deeper into dependence. He is inviting me to trust Him in places where I do not have all the answers and to embrace the uncertainty that often accompanies growth and new beginnings.

I wholeheartedly believe that nothing in my life is possible without Christ. Every opportunity, every lesson, every season of growth has been sustained by His grace. Yet dependence is not a one-time decision. It is a daily invitation.

That is what I heard in Revelation 3:20 this week. Not a knock of correction, but a knock of invitation. An invitation to release comfort, to trust Him more deeply. An invitation to welcome Him into this new season and allow His presence – not my plans – to be my source of confidence. 

So today, my response is yes.

Yes to deeper dependence.

Yes to trusting Him with what I cannot yet see.

Yes to doing hard things, knowing I do not do them alone.

And if God is inviting you into a new season, perhaps His message to you is the same.

You can do hard things – with Him.
