What If Leaning Back Is Exactly What Moves You Forward?

About a year ago, after a season that felt like physical and emotional torture, I finally surrendered to a truth I didn’t want to admit – I needed help.

It wasn’t just about the weight I had gained. It was about the strength I had lost. Chemotherapy had taken more muscle and stamina than I realized, and despite my best intentions, I hadn’t found anything just outside the border of my comfort zone enough to challenge me while rebuilding my strength and confidence.

So I signed up for Pilates. I walked in unsure, but I walked out changed.

One evening, the instructor told us to grab the TRX strap (a canvas cord suspended from the ceiling), walk our feet forward, extend our arms, and lean back. Lean back?

Absolutely not. There was no way I was trusting my full figure of beautifulness to a canvas

cord suspended from the ceiling which appeared to be grossly insufficient to support me. She had clearly lost her mind!

She walked over, smiled and said, “I see… we have trust issues.” I wanted to disappear, but she was right.

In that moment, I realized she was inviting me into something safe, something stronger. She already knew what was possible for me. I just hadn’t leaned into it yet.

So I took a deep breath and leaned back. And I experienced the deepest stretch, release, and exhale.

As I left class, it hit me: this is what I do for women every day. I create the safe space. I see the strength before they do. I gently call out the hesitation. I help them lean into what they already carry inside.

And, isn’t this what God does for us? He sees our strengths because He made us. He knows that walking in obedience and faith can challenge us. But He’s holding us secure in the palm of His hand, just waiting for us to breathe in His peace – just like the TRX strap held me while I released the tension.
